Congratulations! Welcome to the M.J. Program at IU McKinney School of Law! You will find all the information you need to get ready for your first day at IU McKinney here. If you have any questions or need any additional information, please contact us at mjlaw@iu.edu.

Set Up Your Network Id

Just about everything you try to access at IU McKinney will request your network ID. Before you can set up your network ID, you first must make sure you have submitted theIUPUI Graduate Applicationso your university identification may be created. To submit thegraduate application:

  • Navigate to the IUPUI Graduation Application
  • Click on “Begin your application for graduate or professional school at IUPUI” on the center of the screen.
  • Select "Create New Guest Account."
  • Proceed with completing the short application.Note: The Academic Program and Academic Plan are “LawMJ.”
  • Submit your application.

After you are in the main university system, you will receive an email with your University ID number and instructions for setting up your IU network ID (username).

Please set up yournetwork accountby going toAccount Management Services and following the directions to obtain your username and set your password. If you encounter problems with your account set up, please contact IT Support at 317-274-4357 orsupport@iupui.edu.

Upon getting your university ID, you will be able to set up your first IU account. Your first IU account is important to setup; this will create your IU email, username, and passphrase that will be used throughout your academic program.

IU uses a two-step process, known as “Duo.” This is an additional layer of security when you log into certain IU technology services. You will need to go to One.IU.edu and type "Duo" into the search bar to access the Duo setup.

**If you previously attended IUPUI or another IU campus, your ID number and login information should remain the same, but feel free to create a new email address for the IUPUI campus.**

For All Incoming Students:

Citizenship Verification

You may or may not need to fill out the Citizenship Verification form, depending on whether you have completed it in the past. To ensure you have a completed Citizenship Verification form or to fill out a new one, go to One.IU and type “Citizenship Verification” in the search box.

Immunization Requirements

Indiana University has an immunization requirement that affects all attending classes. Students will need to be compliant with this requirement before their first major semester is completed (for MJ students this will be the fall semester). If you are not compliant by the end of the fall semester, you will not be able to register for the next semester until you are compliant. You may review therules and policies here. To submit your immunizations, you will need to go to the Student Center and click on the immunization link, where you can upload your documents.

Orientation

Thenew student orientation for incoming first-year students will be held on Friday, June 28, from 5:30PM – 8:45PM. More detailed information will be forwarded to you prior to Orientation.

Getting to know One.IU

One.IU is the location where you can find all your student information, including financial aid summaries, class schedules, tuition bills, and personal contact information.

To use One.IU:

  • Log in to One.IU. This is accessible on the law school’s main website; click on “Tools,” then “One.IU.”
  • Search for and select “Student Center.”
  • Make sure your personal information (date of birth, residency status, etc.) is correct. If any changes need to be made that you can't edit, please email mjlaw@iu.edu.

Useful items in One.IU:

  • Bursar Bill – You can find your bill by going to One.IU and searching for “view/pay bursar bill.”
  • Grades/Unofficial Transcript - You can find your grades and unofficial transcripts by going to One.IU and searching under “Student Center.” Click on “My academic and Grades” and then select what you want to see.

Registration and Bills

We will register you for the summer Legal Process class (as well as all subsequent classes). To register you for Legal Process, your University ID must be activated for the MJ program, and there cannot be any encumbrances on your bursar’s account. Once you’re registered for classes, your schedule will appear in “One.IU.”

Bills are generated on the third Thursday of the month and payment is due by the 10th of the following month. To estimate your tuition and fees for the semester, see theTuition and Fee Estimatoron the Bursar's page.

You will be registered for your fall classes by the end of July. Your advisor will need to approve your courses, either by signing your registration form or via email. Your completed registration form must include the class number, subject, catalog number, course description, and instructor. You can find this information on the student schedules for the upcoming terms.

Once your course registration form is completed, send your form to mjlaw@iu.edu.

It is important to remember that you cannot be registered for classes if you have any holds on your account. You can check your bursar’s account by going to One.IU and searching under “Student Center.”

Purchasing Books and Accessing First Assignments

Most law books can be purchased in new or used condition, and some may be available for rental.

You can see which books are required for your classes by using theTextbook Searchfeature on the campus bookstore's website. The bookstore will have updated book lists over the summer. You can also buy your books online through Barnes & Noble or by shopping online elsewhere.Half.com,The Textbook Alternative, or BookFinder.comare popular choices for finding used or rental books.

Assignments for your first day of class are typically posted online via Canvas, the university’s learning management system. Canvas includes most of the standard tools found in open source and commercial management systems (assignments, discussions, announcements, quizzes, syllabus, etc.) as well as enhanced tools and features for communication, collaboration, and assessment, including real-time web conferencing, a multimedia recorder, a Google Docs integration, outcomes and rubrics, and course analytics. You can find more information about Canvas here.Canvas may be accessed by clicking on the “Tools” bar on the law school’s main website page or One.IU.

Note: All courses you are currently enrolled in will be listed in Canvas unless your professor decides to use another online forum (e.g. Westlaw – TWEN) to communicate with your class during each semester.

To Get your Crimson Card (Student ID card)

Once you’re registered for classes, you can get your University ID card, also known as the Crimson Card. You will need to go either to the Campus Card Services Office located in the Campus Center at 420 University Boulevard or to the Informatics & Communication Technology Complex (ICTC), located north of the law school, to obtain your card. Be sure to take a photo ID with you. You may find the office hours for each location here.

To Get Your Parking Permit

You may purchase your parking permit for summer classes anytime after May 1, if you have been registered for summer classes by that time. This pass will cover your parking during Legal Process and until classes begin in the fall. If you do not want to buy a parking pass for the summer session, please consult the parking services website for locations where you can park. You can purchase a parking pass for fall or an annual pass starting August 1. Permits can be purchased online fromParking Services.

Computers

Although you are not required to purchase a laptop, most students do. The school does not have a platform preference. The exam software we use is compatible with both Mac and PC computers. However, if you are using Microsoft Works as your word processing software, you should switch to Microsoft Word.

IU has special deals with computer vendors and makes select software available for students to download. Visit UITS for more information.

Lockers

Lockers are available on a first-come, first-served basis. To get one, you must complete a locker assignment agreement form and turn it into the Office of Student Affairs. Forms are available online (here) or the main area where the lockers are located.

Student Health Insurance

There is a mandatory student health insurance plan for International Students. More information on this plan can be found on the IUPUI Office of International Affairs website.You may review more information about what health services are available for students here.

Exams

Information about Exam4 the software used to take exams can be found here.Please note that you will need to login to the law school Intranet to access.

All questions regarding the exams should be directed to the Office of Student Affairs.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

Accommodations for disabilities are granted and administered solely by the Office of Student Affairs. Faculty members are not authorized to grant or deny disability accommodations. For more information on this please see the IU McKinney student handbook.

Students for Whom English is a Second Language

Students for whom English is a second language may apply to the Office of Student Affairs for special accommodations on their final examinations. This request must be made within the first two weeks of the semester. For more information on this please see the student handbook.

Obligation to Maintain Accuracy

Your Continuing obligation to keep us informed

Youare responsible for maintaining the accuracy of the information furnished on your original application. Please keep in mind this obligation continues throughout the admissions cycle and during your enrollment as a student. Any intentional or inadvertent misstatements may result in the revocation of your admission and/or MJ degree.

If you have new information or updates to include in your file, whether it is because it was inadvertently or deliberately omitted at the time your application was submitted or has arisen from recent events,you must immediately send a written notice and explanation of that information to the MJ Office. In addition, you are required to update your personal information in the IU Student Center.

This information may include but is not limited to, any changes to your current email address, mailing address, and telephone numbers. Once you establish your IU email address, it will be used for all official communication from IU. Please be sure to check your IU email frequently. Information will be sent to you throughout the year. It is your responsibility to ensure your contact information is up-to-date so that can you receive all information.
