You can’t sell scrap metal for money if you don’t have a source seeing as it obviously has to come from somewhere. With a bit of common sense, you should already know this as a hauler or collector. Clearly, your access to sellable stock will need to be consistent if you want to earn a steady income. So how do you get your hands on the stuff?
1. Online
You can gather some extra scrap metal to add to your haul by accepting other people’s stuff from websites like:
2. Businesses & Factories
Dealers can consult businesses and see if they have any waste metal they are willing to let you have for free. Sometimes factories that manufacture soft drinks have defective aluminum cans that they either don’t want or can’t use so you can enquire about that.
3. Work Sites & Tradespeople
You can ask demolition and construction sites for spare scrap metal as long as you have permission. If you have any family or friends who are tradespeople then you can ask them to set aside any leftovers from their work. These people are typically:
- electricians
- builders
- plumbers
- mechanics
4. Home
Chances are that you have lots of unwanted goods cluttering up space in your home. People tend to dump their neglected belongings in attics and basements of their homes so these might be good places to start searching.
5. Neighbors, Friends & Family
You can provide a free removal service by going around your neighborhood knocking on doors. Residents may want to donate any unwanted items to you. Those with already overflowing recycling bins will more than likely take you up on that offer.
6. Your Workplace
Ask your superior for permission to place your own recycling bin within the workplace (maybe a staff room or cafeteria area).
Colleagues can then deposit their metal so that you can then collect it at a later date with minimal effort on your part. You can also repeat this in other public places but you run the risk of theft.
7. The Streets
Is it worth checking the roadside? Sadly, some people selfishly dump their waste products on the side of the road if they are having trouble disposing of them in the right way.
However, you can capitalize on this by salvaging it for yourself and also doing the community a favor by dealing with the problem at hand.
BONUS – Discount Shops & Stalls
It’s okay to buy inventory for a modest price in order to sell on as long as you know that you can eventually make a profit from it. Think about how much you want to sell it for while taking business expenses into account as well. You can grab a bargain at auctions and also find scrap metal by checking out:
- flea markets
- charity shops
- thrift stores
- various other sales that are happening near you
Sourcing scrap metal for sale is a big part of a dealer’s job. If you’re still stuck for location ideas then take a quick look around as it’s used pretty much everywhere in one form or another.
Are there any sources of scrap metal near me? The nice thing is that it can be used and recycled several times over so there will always be leftovers available for business.
Finding stock is one issue, but you also need to think about who you are going to sell the scrap metal to once you have it in your possession. My advice would be to research places and companies like disposal yards and recycling centers in your local area as many of these sites buy scrap metal for cash from the public.
If you can find a job within this industry at one of these establishments then you won’t necessarily have to worry so much about sourcing.
As a guide, you can learn about other aspects of scrap metal dealing besides sourcing when you check out .
Can you think of any particular places where you might be able to find lots of items to sell? Do you know anyone who comes across unwanted scrap metal in their jobs?
